Sustainability
The brand was created by a mother of two and MA graduate of London College of Fashion, Birgit Kadak in 2014 from the need to protect her first-born's sensitive skin who was diagnosed with atopic dermatitis. After her discovery that most of the brands in the luxury and mainstream childrenswear market are using synthetic and materials full of chemicals, she decided to create a small collection for babies with organic materials. An investigation by Greenpeace, “A little story about the monsters in your closet” was an eye-opener for Birgit and the motivation she needed to create her own brand.
All Bebe Organic fabrics are locally sourced from Portugal and many materials are specially developed so they are unique and naturally best for your child. Bebe Organic is constantly looking for creativity in processes and technologies that reduce environmental impact and provide a sustainable and safer choice for children's skin and the earth. Our main fabrics in the collection are organic cotton and linen, wool and recycled materials. To guarantee that our materials are organic, we use cotton certified by GOTS (Global Organic Textile Standard) and OCS (Organic Content Standard). The GOTS certification ensures that a minimum of 70% of fibres are organically constructed in a toxic-free working environment, and the OCS ensures that 100% of fibres are organic. We also have started to use a natural dyeing process that has completely redesigned and revolutionised the harmful, conventional dyeing methods and offers a 100% chemical-free approach, guaranteeing quality and duration and also packaging to bring the most sustainable garment on the market.
Every year, Bebe Organic creates two limited-edition collections with high-quality materials and a sustainable approach to traditional production methods in Portugal. Working closely with small family-run factories ensures us tailored and dedicated service, particular attention to detail, transparency and quality control.
Our designs are meticulously executed into patterns, and fittings are made on children and babies in every size to ensure movement and the perfect cut. We have focused on each aspect of design, from the softest trims to the safest buttons to our carefully chosen natural materials and construction. Every piece is special - with great attention to details and comfort. We consider that our products should be used long and well through good care, repair and perhaps redesign. When the product is no longer desired, it should be handed into a secondhand shop, donated to charity or passed down to future generations to prolong its active life.
