Mother Muse - Chapter Three

This week we connect with Catarina, originating from the Algarve and now residing in London's east end as a digital content creator and mum to baby Wolf.

Tell us a bit about yourself, Catarina.

I’m a 30 year old content creator, writer and now mum to little Wolf! I’m Portuguese but I’ve been in the UK for 9 years. I love cooking, writing, reading and capturing the world around me.

Where do you live and how long have you lived there?

I live in East London and I’ve been living here for just over two years. I love where I live. During the pandemic, I realised I had a pretty amazing community around me, the support network I have in Leyton has proven to be awesome specially during these first weeks of motherhood.

What do you love about the city you are living in?

I love that, even though London is huge, my neighbourhood feels like a small village. The day I moved in the neighbours gave us flowers and a card, how cute is that? Also I love how diverse London is and that we have access to so much art. London makes you feel like you are travelling the entire world without boarding a plane.

What is your daily routine?

Right now is all about keeping my two week old fed, clean and rested. I’m loving the newborn bubble, I have honestly never been this happy. I’m a bit tired but also in awe of my son and how much he changes day by day.

What’s the best thing about being a new mother?

The limitless cuddles I get with him while breastfeeding, his smell and all the cute faces and noises he makes that put a smile on my face.

What are your favourite activities at home and out and about?

At home I love to cook and host people. In fact, one of the best things I did before giving birth was to batch cook a bunch of dishes which has allowed me to not have to think about what to eat everyday. When I’m out and about I love going to the cinema, to the theatre and on long walks with my dog, Ripley.

What are your favourite cafes and restaurants in your area you like to visit?

I love Yardam on Francis Road in Leyton, it’s perfect for brunch and offers a great selection of wines. I also love Perky Blender’s coffee and their Unholy Bagels (try the cinco the Mayo one, it’s my favourite).

How would you describe your fashion style?

My style is quite minimal and masculine, I actually share a lot of my wardrobe with my husband. I just love oversized shirts or a full suit.

What is your dream getaway?

I think the pandemic has made me appreciate the UK a lot more, I love weekend getaways to the seaside. I was born in the Algarve in Portugal, so I’m the happiest by the sea. However, my dream holiday would be to visit Japan. I love that the culture is an interesting blend of Eastern traditions and Western modernity. Oh, I can’t wait to travel again!

What is the greatest lesson your mother taught you?

To treat others how I want to be treated. My mum is the most loving and generous person I know. She has the biggest heart on the planet.

What has been your proudest moment?

The moment I gave birth to my son, Wolf, at home. I felt the most empowered I have ever felt. In that moment I felt capable of anything.

Your daily inspiration and what inspires you?

Love is my daily inspiration. My husband is the most creative person I know and I’m always in awe of his talented brain and kind heart. In any and all circumstances, love is a wonderful thing. I’m always inspired by love stories, all kinds of love.
